Protecting health in natural disasters
2021-05-12
During disasters and humanitarian crises reproductive health services are either lacking or almost non-existent. This research focuses on reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in low-and middle-income countries through the design and provision of reproductive health kits during disasters and crises. These kits consist of essential medicines and supplies/equipment required for incomplete abortion and post-abortion complications. The contents of the kits can be procured locally and pre-positioned at a health facility prior to a disaster or can be administered impromptu during a disaster. Reproductive health kits are vital for service continuity; saving lives of poor and vulnerable pregnant women and women of reproductive age; and capacity building of health professionals. In doing so, reproductive health kits contribute towards a nation’s health and wellbeing.
