Five years of ‘Citizens of Change’ changing society

At the heart of our Citizens of Change strategy is a commitment to making a positive difference to society. In this update, Professor Dan Ladley, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Head of College and Executive Dean of the School of Business, shares some of the key successes, partnerships and achievements delivered through the Our Citizens theme of our strategy over the past five years.
Universities have a unique role to play in society. Alongside educating students and advancing research, they can help tackle real-world challenges, bring people together and support the places they call home.
At the University of Leicester, working in partnership with our communities is at the heart of what we do. From helping shape public policy and supporting young people into higher education, to driving climate action and making research accessible to everyone, we are committed to making a positive difference for our communities.
Turning Research into Real-World Change
One of the ways we are helping address society’s biggest challenges is through the Leicester Institute for Policy. Launched in 2024, the Institute was established to strengthen the connection between research and decision-makers, ensuring academic expertise is helping to inform policy at local, national and international levels. It brings together researchers, policymakers, civil servants, elected representatives, think tanks and public sector organisations to work together.
By connecting academic knowledge with those developing policy, the Institute is helping tackle issues that matter to people and communities, from health and wellbeing to economic development, justice, climate change and environmental sustainability. Through policy briefing papers, events and strategic partnerships, it is creating opportunities for evidence-based research to shape decision-making and deliver positive change.
Working Together for Regional Prosperity
The Universities Partnership continues to demonstrate the power of collaboration. Bringing together universities, local authorities and partners from across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to support initiatives that strengthen the region.
Its work includes helping graduates build careers locally, supporting businesses to innovate and grow, improving access to university facilities, and working with schools and colleges to raise aspirations among young people.
Opening Doors to Higher Education
Leicester’s INTOUniversity Centre continues to have a positive impact on young people from underrepresented backgrounds. Opened in 2024 as a partnership between IntoUniversity, the University of Leicester and De Montfort University, the centre provides academic support, mentoring and aspiration-raising activities for young people across the city. By working closely with schools and communities, and through the involvement of our staff and student volunteers, the centre is helping to break down barriers to higher education and inspire the next generation to aim high and achieve their ambitions.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Initiatives such as the Science Kitchen, led by Dr Josh Smalley, are helping make science accessible, engaging and relevant for people of all ages. Through creative activities and hands-on experiences, the Science Kitchen is inspiring curiosity and encouraging the next generation of scientists, researchers and innovators.
Tackling Climate Change
Bringing together researchers, businesses, community groups, local authorities and citizens, the Leicester Climate Action Network (LCAN) has become a nationally recognised example of how universities, communities and organisations can work together to address climate change.
Through LCAN and the University’s GreenerFuture Leicestershire programme, almost 1,800 organisations have been supported to become more sustainable, with businesses accessing workshops, tailored consultancy, leadership development and practical guidance to help reduce their environmental impact while strengthening resilience and competitiveness. The network is supporting Leicester’s ambition to reach net zero while demonstrating the vital role universities can play as convenors and trusted partners, connecting people, ideas and expertise to deliver meaningful change across the region
Building a More Sustainable Future
Sustainability is increasingly embedded across the University’s activities, from teaching and research to campus operations. Recognition through the EcoCampus Silver Award highlights the progress being made and reflects our commitment to reducing our environmental impact.

These achievements demonstrate what can be accomplished when universities work in partnership with the people and communities they serve.
